Harvest iPhone Update: Improved Syncing

Update: We’re excited to announce that the latest version of our Harvest iPhone app, v1.4, has been released. This version includes a bug fix for syncing expense receipts, and will also backup your receipt photos to your iPhone. You can find it in the App Store on your iPhone.

Today we’re announcing a significant update for our Free official Harvest iPhone app, version 1.3. You can find it in the App Store on your iPhone.

Improved Syncing Reliability

Version 1.3 brings improved reliability with the iPhone syncing to your online Harvest account. Being one of the first to bring offline syncing to time tracking, we’ve now made it even better. The previous code ran into a number of issues during sync, so we decided to overhaul the entire syncing engine. This overhaul includes the removal of 1000+ lines on code in favor of a brand new set of API calls for much more efficient and reliable syncing (these calls will soon be exposed to all API developers and integrations).

Tracking time and expenses on-the-go should be smoother than ever. As an added bonus, the new API calls now allow us to include conflict messages when a sync doesn’t work exactly as planned, so you know exactly what happened:

Other Features

Along with the reliability updates, this version also includes some new features and other improvements, including:

  • You can now create clients, projects, and tasks right from the app
  • A ‘Jump to Today’ button if you go to another day in Timesheets
  • A ‘Jump to this Week’ button if you go to another week in Expenses
  • Project Codes are now displayed
  • Increased font sizes on all inputs
  • Various bug fixes
  • New icon

Enjoy, and let us know how the Harvest iPhone app is helping your business. As always, let us know how we can make it even better.

The Harvest iPhone app allows iPhone users (with iOS 4) to track time and expenses on-the-go, with or without a network connection. You can start and stop task timers, add duration and notes, and upload expense receipts right from your iPhone. Learn more about iPhone Time Tracking.

Sweet! Thanks for the fixes and cool new features.

  • Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. As we primarily use Harvest for tracking time on site this will be a MASSIVE update for our business.

Thanks for this. I wanted to share an observation in case it may help someone else.

It’s curious: I’ve had the iphone app for a couple of years, and I was always annoyed that I couldn’t input expenses, so when i read the above which is written as if expense tracking is nothing new, I wondered what may be up. (I update apps on my phone all the time, so that’s not the issue.)

Sure enough, I went to the app store, searched for the app, and it was listed as available for me to install (whereas usually it tells you if an app is already installed). Curious. And I installed it, and sure enough this is quite different. (There were no buttons for timesheet/expenses/pending at the bottom of the old version I have.)

Maybe something happened on my end to cause itunes to not ever see an update, though I’ve updated over 2 dozen apps in the past two weeks, so it’s definitely not an issue with updates in general. Anyway, I share all this in case it may help someone else who’s not seen such new features in their Harvest iphone app. Looking forward to exploring them! Thanks, Harvest! :-)

Is the option to create, modify and send invoices on your roadmap? It’s the feature I use the most in Harvest and as someone with a small business, being able to see (at a glance) what money is owed to me, or to invoice someone without pulling my laptop would be huge.

  • Ivan Radisson on August 15, 2011

Dustin, use the smartphone you have and access your account on the regular harvest website ( ).

    It just works.

  • Ivan Radisson on August 15, 2011

Is the iPhone app still exclusive for iOS 4 ?

Reason i ask is because i tried to install it a while ago on an iPhone 2g running iOS 3 and it refused to install. I havent tried it since then.

But I remember way before, the app used to install fine on the iPhone 2g.

  • Love it! But I did notice a bug… I started a timer on the computer and then edited the notes on my phone and synced. It did sync the notes, but it also added the time on the phone to the time on the computer giving me twice what I should’ve had. I think it’ll be great for those times that I forget to stop the timer, though!

@Charlie Yes, we made the expense feature available via the iPhone app last year, you can read about it here, sorry to hear that you weren’t notified via the app store:

@Dustin Thanks for letting us know you’d like to see that, it’s on our list for the future. And @Ivan is right, in the meantime you can access the full site (and all of your invoices) via the browser.

@Ivan We’ll check into that and let you know.

@Ann Please send your bug issue information (with a screenshot if possible!) to support AT – we can investigate from there, and thanks!

  • Matt Lettini on August 16, 2011

@Ivan Thanks for bringing this up. We forgot to clarify that our app is iOS 4 only. We’ll be sure to update the information in the post.

  • charlie arehart on August 16, 2011

@Karen, I blogged about this (, and I got a response from someone that may explain what happened.

Did you by any chance roll that out as a “new” version as opposed to an update? They noted that when developers do that (intentionally, such as to allow a user to have two versions at once during a rollout period), the problem is that users of the old app just never see any more updates and unless they learn of it somehow, they never get the new version (or any more updates).

I found at least two apps for which this was the situation. If that’s the case here, then I wonder how many other people have the old app and don’t even know about the new one.

Could you maybe put out an update for the old one that tells people to get the new one? I watch itunes updates on my phone closely and read each update’s notes. If it had told me to do that, I would have. (Perhaps you could also mention it in a blog entry or gazette issue, or did indeed, but admittedly people can easily miss reading any one issue. If you didn’t, though, it may be worth considering also.)

I’ll grant this may seem like “not a big deal” and that “no one else has complained”, but it’s one of those problems where those who don’t know about it have no reason to complain. (I just grew to accept that for some reason you weren’t going to let us do expenses. I though it annoying, but I wasn’t feeling compelled to complain. Perhaps there are many others in that boat, or with respect to any other new features in the then-new version.)

    Hope that’s helpful.

@charlie This is very helpful for us, thanks, I’ll have the team check into this “new” vs “update” issue – we appreciate you letting us know!

We just had a strange thing happen on the second day of use with the newest update, on the iTouch. An employee clocked in at 11:25am then clocked out shortly thereafter. This is how Havest saved the time and synced it with the web account: Start 11:25am-11:24am, 23:59 hours. (This should have been an entry of several minutes, not 23 hours.)

Yes, the time and date had been reset on the iTouch.

Also, on its own, it duplicated this entry. So we ended up with two 23 hour entries instead of one entry of several minutes.
    Still bugs in the system??

  • Matt Lettini on August 18, 2011

@Christina Please send your bug issue information (with a screenshot if possible!) to support AT – we can investigate from there, and thanks!

  • We track time via start and end time. Unfortunately we suffer with a lot of mistakes using this app because the start- and stoptimes are not logged. Do we miss something?

  • Karen Schoellkopf on August 23, 2011

@Wim The iPhone app tracks start and stop times, but it doesn’t allow for editing those start and stop times from within the app. You’ll need to navigate to your Harvest account, which you can access through your Mobile Safari browser, and then click “Main Site” in the lower righthand corner. This will take you to the full version of Harvest, where you can then edit your start and stop times. Sorry for the inconvenience, and hope that workaround helps in the meantime.

  • @Karen: the app tracks the current time as starttime and calculates the stoptime. Both are always incorrect. This method is confusing because it suggests it tracks specific times but is doesn’t. Harvest-unworthy imho. Hope the app will be much better in the near future.

  • Karen Schoellkopf on August 24, 2011

@Wim Please send us examples of any time discrepancies you’re experiencing with the iPhone app to to support AT – we can investigate from there, and thanks!

  • to reiterate @Dustin, I would like to be able to see what is owed on the app. the browser is okay for now but is slower than just seeing it all on the app. So getting this on the app would be much appreciated. I personally do not need to do invoices and such but when I’m with a client, it would be helpful to see what they owe right away. Thanks for this cool feature!

  • As a project manager it would also be cool to be able to see the time logged in by users from my phone when I’m not in the office.

  • Karen Schoellkopf on August 25, 2011

    @Melanie Thanks for the feedback!

  • Anyone else noticed the app is _really_ slow? This is on an iPhone 3GS.

  • Matt Lettini on September 20, 2011

@Ben We haven’t noticed any slowness in the app on the iPhone 3GS, but please write in to us to support AT and we can investigate from there, thanks!

  • I _think_ I have resolved this by uninstalling and re-installing. Noticed a couple of crashes when submitting expenses (re-opening the ap, and the photo has gone). Will also test speed on 3G connection as currently on wifi.

  • At first glance, nice subtle improvements to usability. Love the inline scrollable menus rather than the iOS menus – much easier and quicker to find and select list items.

One feature I’m constantly hoping for is “duplicate expense” to make it easier to log recurring/frequent expenses (I log my parking daily, and need to edit all 5-6 fields with the same info every time).

  • Is it even being considered for future updates of the iphone app to make start and stop times editable? I forgot to stop my time before I left the office yesterday, so I used the iphone app on my way home to stop my time and changed it to 8 hours. Instead of it rolling back my stop time to 8 hours from the start time, it changed my start time to 8 hours before the time I stopped the timer, making it appear that i arrived late to work. This makes the app completely unusuable for me, which is very disappointing. =( I would love to see start and stop times editable as a future update to the iphone app, which would make the iphone app my primary interface with Harvest (I would love that)!

  • Yes, great to hear I can add clients & projects on app on the fly…but I have Android. ETA on that?

  • Matt Lettini on September 27, 2011

@Chris Thanks for the feedback! We’ll add it to the feature request list.

@Carie Thanks for the feedback, and this is a feature on our list. I will add your name to the notification list for this request. You should hear from us if and when we have anything to announce in the future.

@Dan We are looking to bring the syncing updates to the Android platform at this time. We can not offer any estimates on a launch date.

  • That’s music to my ears! Thank you!! =)

  • I love Harvest! It has simplified my Interior Design business so that I can do what I like and not be bogged down with trying to remember who, what and when – especially on the road! I would love to see the ability to attach PDF documents (expenses, images, etc.) in to my invoices in the future. It helps to have the attachments at the time of invoicing and not have to send the invoice to myself, attach the documents and then send it to the client. Otherwise, I tell every independent contractor I know to get on Harvest!

  • I love Harvest – easy to use & great functionalities. However, I miss one thing: I travel a lot abroad and generate expenses in foreign currencies. The Harvest App just lets me input expenses in my billing currency. However, I would need the possibility to enter the amount in original (foreign currency) and let Harvest convert the amount in my billing currency. Did I miss something – or – is this functionality available?

  • Karen Schoellkopf on October 3, 2011

    @Lisa That’s great to hear!

@Daniel We currently do not support currency conversion for expenses, but I’ll make a note of your request – thanks for letting us know.

  • Hello

@Alex Write us at ‘support AT’ and we’ll help you investigate your issue.

  • David Scott on November 23, 2011

The app installed an update only last week and crashes every time I try to open it on an iPhone 3G, iOS 4.0. Are the ‘old’ phones no longer supported?

  • Matt Lettini on November 23, 2011

@David – I believe the app should work with your phone. Please write into support AT so we can troubleshoot, thanks.
