Introducing Harvest Forecast

For the past year, a small team within Harvest has been working behind-the-scenes on a brand new project.

Today, after 5,443 hours of research, design, prototypes, more research, rewrites, polishes and betas, we’re excited to unveil our newest product: Harvest Forecast.


Thinking About the Future

For the past eight years, Harvest has refined how businesses track, analyze, and get paid for their time.

As our customers have grown their businesses, we recognized that Harvest was only part of the solution. Tracking time in the present and past was easy, but there was no answer for the future. Coordinating team assignments and schedules proved to be challenging. You might ask questions like:

  • Do we have enough capacity to take on a new client in two weeks?
  • What are the important milestones and deadlines on our projects this week?
  • Should we hire another person to meet the upcoming project demands?
  • How can we share this plan with the team?

Traditionally, businesses call this kind of scheduling “resource planning.” We like to think of it simply as team time planning.

Many businesses build spreadsheets to try to manage this planning. What we’ve heard from our customers, however, is that spreadsheets just don’t cut it. They’re unwieldy, difficult to maintain, and hard to share.

A New Way to Plan Your Team’s Time

Here at Harvest, we started to imagine what a truly modern solution to the problem could look like. Time was already our primary focus, and we knew that there could be a simpler answer.

We put together a small team of developers and designers with three key concepts in mind:

  • Be Visual – Scheduling projects and people is easier when done as a simple, visual experience.
  • Be Fluid – Accept the reality that schedules and priorities frequently change. Make the information easy to update and maintain so that it can accurately reflect reality.
  • Be Transparent – Plans work best when everyone knows where their time should go. The easier they are to share, the more informed and productive everyone becomes.

Around these simple concepts, Forecast was born. It’s a simple, visual way for you and your team to collaborate on who is working on what and when. It’s a solution designed precisely for the challenge.

Just the Beginning

While Forecast is beautifully simple to use on its own, we’re most excited about the possibilities for people who use Forecast in tandem with Harvest. Harvest tells you how your team spent time; Forecast anticipates where your team will spend time.

At launch, we’re starting simple. Harvest customers can easily bring all of their clients, projects, and people right into Forecast and start scheduling.

In the coming months, we have big plans to bridge the future and the past. One of our primary goals is to surface estimates vs actuals so that business owners and project managers can have previously unavailable insight into how they run their projects.

After listening to input from many of you, and after deep consideration on our part, we’ve decided it’s best to price by person rather than by projects. You can learn about our new pricing here.

This past month has been an amazing ride, and we’ve heard a lot of great feedback and feature requests, many of which were already on our roadmap. We’re looking forward to sharing these updates with you in the coming months.

  • @Roman – You can already connect your Forecast account to Harvest so that it shares the same clients, projects and people (i.e. you won’t need to re-enter any of your info from Harvest). Over the next few months, we’ll be improving that experience by combining information from the two apps.

  • It’d be great to have more detailed project tracking since there are always many levels and components to a project and often team members work on numerous projects at once. Do you believe you believe this is something that Harvest Forecast will work on?

  • @Edith @Jeremy – we’ve designed Forecast to be a high-level planning tool, so while our feature set will expand, we don’t see Forecast becoming a task-level management tool.

    @Marinos – that’s certainly something we’re very interested in as well.

  • This look promising but I’m wondering why Forecast pricing is based on number of projects while Harvest pricing is based on number of people. I’ll do the free trial but the pricing seems high in contrast with the level of integration with Harvest that you’re describing (limited, high-level, not task-level).

  • Great job! We are excited to dive in! The pricing is frustrating as compared to the Harvest. In one platform you charge per person, with unlimited projects, and the other per project with unlimited people. Is there a way to simplify this? Why can’t we have more projects under the $20 plan? Or some kind of unified pricing scheme?



  • We are very excited to add Harvest Forecast to our Harvest account. We often juggle a lot of projects at any given point in time. Harvest’s pricing model meshes perfectly with our business, since we are charged for each person, with unlimited projects.

    I am very surprised to see that with Harvest Forecast, that model is flipped. Between the two services, it seems that every company will be unhappy about the pricing model, whether it’s on the Harvest side or the Forecast side.

    I would love to see a plan, or suite of plans that meshes with Harvest’s plans. The alternative is that we’ll have to try to consolidate some projects together that aren’t used as frequently as others. This just seems like an unnecessary hoop to have to jump through.

  • What would be cool: Forecast takes the hours budget data from a Harvest project entry, divides that by the dates entered into Forecast, and tells you how many hours are needed per week to get it done on time. Then you can divide those hours among everyone on the project as you see fit.

    @Danny, but that is only import! :( as harvestapp user the native synchronization is the MUST feature. and offcourse information about real tracked time on projects.
    And as @Chris mentioned, the pricing model is different and a little bit frustrating (it is countend on number of active projects, or about all projects?) :(
    the product is very nice and we have that plan to using it, but… think please more to harvest users …

  • Like many of the others here have mentioned, the pricing structure would be a deal breaker. We use Harvest now and a separate tool for resource forecasting. I’d love to switch over to Forecast, but with a pricing structure like that, I’ll stick with what we’ve got.

  • Still wish we could turn an approved Estimate into a Project without having to manually create all the data again… sigh.

  • Interesting. Not particular helpful for our needs but can see it being helpful for other others. Just hope this isn’t a signal of a change of strategy of breaking features/products off into sub products that will be billed for separately rather than as included features of Harvest.

  • I’m also quite surprised by the flipped pricing model. I’m assuming most of Harvest’s customers are client service companies which typically have lots of projects per person – hence the need for a tool like Forecast. I’m willing to pay a good price for a useful planning tool, but the current pricing scheme will either force us to have to play around with archiving projects before they should be, or it will make the product prohibitively expensive for what its worth.

  • And wow! Is that pricey! When I first heard about Forecast I thought it would either be an additional component of Harvest or maybe like an extra $5-$10 to your current plan. For us it would be $50-$100. Sorry, we’ll just stick to OmniFocus.

  • Looks like you guys have been busy! I like what I see in this web app and will be monitoring it’s development and progression closely. Here is a little tip for the developer: don’t forget to add the “” to the head of all of your pages so it looks “pretty” when people add a shortcut of their Forecast dashboard to the their iOS device home screen. :)

    It sure is nice to have people adding their comments and suggestions about your new service to help you improve, but I think there could be a little more graciousness and congratulations from them for what you have accomplished. Where is people’s appreciation these days? With that in mind I say to you: Thank you for the time and effort that you have put into this app to help provide for us a system that saves time, energy and money to make our businesses run smoother! I have been particularly blessed with your Harvest time tracking service ever since I got our company to use it 2 years ago this month. Keep up the good work!

    The tool looks very promising, and I am looking forward to trying it out. However, I just don’t see the pricing model working for us. We have seven users, but many (typically over 100) open small projects we’re tracking at any given time. It would be difficult for me to justify paying $100 per month on top of the $70 per month we’re paying for Harvest to add the functionality. For our situation, a per-user cost would seem to be more appropriate.

  • I agree with a few of the other users here on the following:

    1. The pricing model is different from HarvestApp, which may (read: is apparently) a point of contention for existing HarvestApp customers.

    2. Integration of Forecast with HarvestApp should be one of the first goals in order to ease the transition of existing customers and increase revenue.

    Given the idea that application integration is a goal, the different pricing model makes for a harder transition, as HarvestApp users have unlimited projects. How would total integration work with the current pricing structure proposed for Forecast?

    That being said, I’ve checked out the application and, not to my surprise, I love the interface and principles driving Forecast. I am happy to see that a weekly view, along with project budgeting, are being considered – I think both of those features are important for both increasing interface usability, and ensuring a fully enjoyable integration experience.

    I’ll be following this project and am interesting in seeing the development of Forecast! Thanks Harvest!

  • As a solo consultant, It might be worth an increment on current HarvestApp pricing to me; but definitely no interest with the pricing model per project as offered.

  • Nice interface. This might solve a piece that my agency is struggling with, but the pricing model, by project, seems really high. Since it doesn’t do the granular task stuff, seems like a high-level management tool – which means you’ll need other tools too. We use Basecamp and Roadmap, but I like the simplicity for forecasting…if you lowered the pricing model…we might test it out!

  • Well done Harvest. At a glance this looks awesome. I labour over planning time for projects so this may well be a good tool. I agree with some of the comments. Needs to be linked to Harvest and should be incremental pricing (optioning) on Harvest account already.

    I’d be interested in trialling it or being a beta-customer.

  • We currently use Harvest in a consulting environment, and have been seeking a online forecasting tool to support our resource planning. This is of interest to us. Can you tell me if this new tool interfaces with Salesforce?

  • Like almost everyone else who has commented, I think that Forecast looks fantastic and could be a valuable tool. But two factors immediately write it off as a viable option:
    1) the pricing is way too high; and
    2) it’s not integrated with my everyday Harvest.

    On another note, I agree with ReneH’s post: when will we be able to turn an accepted estimate into a working project without having to manually reproduce it?

    I too think the flipped (as compared to Harvest) pricing model is the weakest point here. Product itself seems really nice and I’d love to have that functionality integrated to Harvest, which I’m a huge fan of. BUT. As a freelancer (1 person “team”), having tens of small active clients and projects, I don’t see the value in this pricing model for me.

    This isn;t really useful for scheduling a project, just a team – for the following reasons
    – tasks within a project can’t be scheduled separately, its it’s one big block – meaning you can;t effectively phase a project
    – you cant really name your scheduled elements
    – there’s no dependancies on projects, so you cant moe an end date or milestone, and shift a project.
    when you have over 30 projects on the go, you can’t really see whats going on
    – your filters assume that you’re working on one product, I need to filter by client.

    Generally it doesn’t make sense – Harvest seems geared towards team working with multiple clients whereas forecast seems to be for large teams working on single products.

    I REALLY wanted this to be the product we needed, but its not. We’ll stick with wrike or teamwork for now.

  • I am curious to see a demo, I’d like to see how we could use this for tracking our milestones along with scheduling as this is a huge thing we are missing currently. I am glad it doesn’t do task management.

    I agree with others that the pricing structure seems odd: projects vs users.

Today, you can import and link your accounts, which sets the foundation for the integration.     Looking forward to using what I can only assume will be a great new tool from you guys. From playing with it a bit it seems like early days but it definitely has your awesome UX sensibility going for it.

    Seems like you have followed the standard hours/day allocation model that most tools like this use. For us we assign time in hours/week so we have to do math in our head to get to hours/day. Also, the hours per day approach makes it feel like the team member should be working on each project the same amount each day rather than leaving it up to them how to plan their week. So they then have to calculate back to the hours/week number if they want to work on the projects in succession rather than in parallel.

    Desired workflow:
    1. Estimate in harvest > New project with options for task based budget with new tasks for each line item from the estimate. This way you can track time against your estimate.

    2. Estimate in harvest > New project in Forecast with some way to allocate time against the estimate so you know when you have the project covered. It would be nice if there was a way to assign each line item from the estimate so for example if you have a line item for PM and one for Design, you can match your allocations based on the Team tags in forcast.

  • Chris Rowe nails it for me. This is like all the other tools that we are not using. To be really useful in our context, we would need the option to make projections with the following models:
    -the current model of hour per week per project
    -manually enter time per day (or week).

    This is because most of our projects are uneven. We’ll do a bunch of work, wait for approval (random time) then a bunch of work.

    I agree with Chris. I’d like to be able to use hours per week, not day. I also still haven’t figured out how to show that a project will take a certain number of days. Guess I need to do more playing.

  • Would love to see the ability to display a name of the item we are forecasting. Would allow me to move work around within a project. As it is we can not use it for software development planning the way we had hoped. Would also like to see if track to the timesheet to see if expected hours for the person on the project was what was planned.

    Would also love to have the ability to create a project from an estimate. Wish we could find a way to use Forecast as we love Harvest App.

  • Hi, earlier this year I interpreted your announcement of project features in Harvest as something in the lines of estimate vs. actual spent time on a project as a new feature in Harvest. Is that still on the way or did I misinterpret the announcement?

    For the forecastapp I as much as I like seeing you approach this topic I would rather prefer to see the estimate/actual topic tackled first. I agree with previous posters that there should not be the necessity to enter forecast data multiple times, once in the estimate, then in forecast. Pricing should be in relation to the actual development state not the projected development of the product.

  • Just chiming in with some of the other comments: The flipped pricing model makes little sense to us. It creates the potential for funny situations where Forecast users can’t track their time in Harvest or Harvest projects can’t be planned in Forecast.

    We’d love more integration between Forecast and Harvest, both in functionality and pricing. The two products feel like a extension to each other, so please don’t make us jump through hoops. I’d prefer to use the same user account for both. Seeing weekly hour totals (budget and actual) is a must.

    I feel that broad planning in the estimate phase of a project should be easier, we usually plan based on hours per week for the whole team. In this phase we usually plan with pencil: We reserve time/days so that we can take the project on if the estimate is accepted, but only once it’s accepted we definitely schedule the time. That is also the moment where we’ll be planning actual work on the level of hours per day for each individual.

    I agree with all of the comments on your pricing structure above and slightly surprised you Harvest guys didn’t pick up on this in your post yesterday seeing as virtually every other post complains about it.
    Yes, it’s too expensive and yes it should mimic the per person pricing you offer on harvest currently. Hopefully you’re listening to the masses but otherwise keep up the good work.

    Great job, excellent UX as usual. Is this a first (and good) step towards creating a “perfect” Multi-Resource Scheduling tool?…
    It could be very useful to us as to do high-level, rough-cut capacity planning/resource scheduling (we’re currently using Excel of course), but the next features would be needed:
    – time scale should be flexible (I can only see ‘week view’, so basically a span over 4 weeks. Monthly view would be needed.I n our case, projects spans from a few weeks to a few months), and we’re planning 3 to 6 months in the future
    – zooming in/out in scale: if more than 12 people, need to scroll up and down, which could be annoying.
    – filters/sorting in the People/Project column

  • we currently use Trello for project forecasts..( a la kanban style )
    but i would be willing to try forecasts if it was for $5/m.. not $100.
    especially if im paying $40/m now.. which i was considering to completely drop for Freshbooks which offers the same feature set for $20/m

    think value-add-on.. nothing more.

  • For our needs, this is actually pretty well suited. We’ve recently started using Float ( for exactly this, but Forecast has nicer UX, and some neat little features which make it easy to view things.

    One little request – the amount of AJAX stuff going on here makes things a bit laggy, and probably makes this tricky, but the biggest thing I’m missing from Float right now is that to scan a few months, I have to click, click, click, click on the arrows to navigate week by week.

    That javascript could do with some serious optimisation, and a longer duration view than 4 weeks, would be a massive UX improvement. Check out how Float allows you to scroll sideways to quickly scan a longer period.

  • Exactly what we are looking for – a powerful but simple consultant planning tool. Do agree with the others however – pricing seems to be off, and would like to see some sort of bundled pricing with Harvest Timesheet.

  • You seem to have got this all wrong – smaller companies tend to have a higher number of projects with a lower number of people. Bigger companies might have fewer projects but a higher staff count.

    The app is designed around multi-person teams working on a single product, yet your pricing model makes it crazily expensive for the smaller studio which takes on loads of little jobs.

    Why not just do it the normal way round and scale with the number of people?

  • Forecast Pricing:

    I agree with Zander’s statement around the fact that your pricing for the forecast tool is based on “projects” rather than on “people”. That doesn’t make sense since your primary time tracking tool is billed by # of people.

    We have a few people and lot of clients (i.e. projects) so billing by project makes this forecasting tool more expensive than the time tracking tool.

    I like the idea but we won’t adopt forecasting tool until the pricing model matches your time tracking pricing.


  • Love that you are headed this direction, but besides importing all of the projects/people there is a huge disconnect with the functionality of Harvest. You have an incredible opportunity to combine the two products instead of having them separate. I hope you add this functionality, because with the current price model, I don’t think the value is quite there yet.

    Signed up for free trial. Import of staff from Google apps went poorly. No correspondence was recognized between staff I had already, and those listed in google apps. So, the import was not apparently a necessary step, which was not clear. The
    “send feedback” button is not actually operable. Not sure now how to access.

    A great deal of functionality could be added to Harvest itself, but perhaps it is not of interest b/c improvements would not result in additional fees from users. I’d like to see these improvements addressed. The data in Harvest is poorly leveraged. All company earning and project data is there, but it can only be formatted into invoices according to a limited format. For my most finicky client, I currently dump data into Excel tables, which are read into Access and formatted into acceptable invoices with alternative formatting.

  • Hi, this looks great, but as many others commented; the flipped pricing model does not appeal (as compared to Harvest). Looking forward to hear your answers on this issue before getting into testing it.

  • I was excited to read the news but became quickly disappointed. Needs complete integration with Harvest (including time-sheets) to be useful, and the pricing model needs to be reassessed.

  • This could be the tool I’ve been looking for for years. So far, all ‘resource planning’ tools have been a pain.

    A few notes:
    – I imported projects and people from harvest. Although this worked reasonably well, it didn’t import the link between people and projects (harvest knows what people work on what projects), so I had to assign people to the projects manually.
    – What happens to projects once they are done, do they still count towards your total? Or does ’30 projects’ mean ’30 active projects’?
    – Would be great to be able to drag and drop assignments between people (it can be done via a popup but drag and drop might be nice)
    – Splitting assignments is painful. This is a common usecase: you’ve got someone assigned to a project for 4 months and something else comes up and you need them on a different project for a week. This currently means: editing the 4 month assignment and ending it today, adding a new one that starts in a week, and finally adding the new project. Would be great to have a ‘split’ action and the ability to drag the start/end.
    – I can’t seem to figure out how to set someones availability. We have parttimers that work 32 hours a week, yet the tool only considers them full when I assign 40, which easily leads to overbookings.
    – I can’t seem ti indicate how much time a project needs and whether the current allocation is not enough or too much to complete the project. It shoudl compare against a budget and tell me it needs x more hours to be fully assigned.

    So it looks very promising, but I get the feeling so far its more of a calendaring tool than a resource planning tool.

  • I want to be able to bring all of our consultants to view this, but not sure how your security roles work i.e. does Person A working for client see other clients and projects.

    I also can’t zoom in to get a weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly view…at the moment i have to scroll week by week into the future

    But I found some serious issues using it with Safari (Version 7.0.5 on OS X 10.9.4): it’s extremely slow and makes navigation browser on this site and other site impossibile!
    Is Harvest Forecast NOT supporting Safari?

    Just had the bizarre experience of signing up for Forecast only to get to a UI that is identical with Harvest’s, but with no connection to our existing projects. WTF?

    I like the idea, but I’ll wait until it’s fully integrated and I don’t have to waste time importing all our current staff, etc.

    And I agree with the other comments about the pricing – this is a value-add product.

  • Nice tool and works really easy. The only thing I miss is that I can’t plan resources on weekdays. For example I’ve a project that a developer is working on for 16 hours a week for a period of time. Mostly on thursdays and fridays. How do I plan this?

    This looks like a great start !!!

    We have been using Harvest Time Tracking for 4 years now and all the team love it for both time and expenses. We have been looking for a forecasting tool for the same amount of time and because we have been spoiled by Harvest Time Tracking we have rejected the very few that came even close to the right functionality on the grounds of usability.

    We are a medium sized consultancy with 20 staff and about 30 projects on the go at any one time. For this to work for companies like us as a forecasting tool (and I understand it is not intended to be a project management tool) there are some must haves in terms of functionality :

    – The ability to plan resource at task level – our projects can last from 1 month to a year and our people do not work on them constantly so having their time smeared thinly over a year for the whole project does not work for scheduling purposes. Breaking the project down into tasks and allocating people and time to these or the project as a whole would solve this.

    – Being able to allocate an individual more than once to a project (or task) for separate blocks of time would be great and could alleviate some of the above.

    – In the current guise – entry of decimal time is a must have.

    – Entering time as a number of days and a start and finish date (or select the whole phase) as an alternative to number of hours per day would be useful.

    – The ability to zoom to different periods of time on the schedule would also be great.

    – The ability to set working hours per day and working days per week for individuals.

    There are lots of other bits that would be nice but the above are really essential in making this a really usable tool for anything other than small short term projects.

    The current functionality looks like a great start and future integration possibilities with Time Tracking are exciting. Pricing is not an issue for the right tool in this area.

  • Totally agree with Rob’s comment.

    My boss created a new account to get Forecast working, so now we have 2 separate accounts accounts. Then he added me to his account, but when I accepted the invite, for some reason it logged me into a new Harvest account instead of a Forecast account.

    I then tried signing myself up, which meant creating another account, and after looping through a few signup and login screens, I eventually somehow ended up in Forecast.

    The process was actually quite confusing considering how much I love Harvest and was committed to trying out Forecast, otherwise I would have quit after the first try.

    In any case, I think you’ve jumped the gun on releasing this product. It should be fully integrated with existing customer accounts first. Forecast looks like a great product, but I feel more let down by the shabby integration rather than excited about the new product.

    We’re holding out for now.

  • Looks like this will be a huge help and I’m willing to pay the extra 50-100/month, but I don’t want to create a new account. Please just let me add Forecast to Harvest and let me select the people and projects to get started with.

    I just don’t have time to re-enter 30+ projects and 20 people.

  • Is there any plans for Forecast to not only help assign team members to projects but to calculate future expected income based on when invoices are due and predict cashflow by enabling association of employee costs to each project?

    Harvest user here.

    The functionality in Forecast looks good: not too complicated, and easy UI.
    The pricing seems a bit off for our company with few employees and many projects, but if it becomes possible to buy a combined Harvest/Forecast subscription we’ll definately consider it.

    One thing I’m missing in the Scheduling part is being able to enter recurring tasks. This shouldn’t be too hard to implement I would guess, and not having to re-enter those weekly meetings for every week would make planning much easier.

    Still, looks like a potentially great product!

  • This seems like a great addition, very clean and will help plan things out, but for that price? I doubt many people will use it…

    I actually introduced harvest to my new work and since have started using it regularly to track time for the whole office.

    This feature seems more like an add-on, something to charge a small amount for on top of Harvest.

    I’m actually pretty let down by how overpriced this product is. It seems like you’re basking in the success a little too much perhaps? Considering finding another solution if this is what’s planned for the future…

    We have been using Harvest for tracking hours on projects for several years now.

    We have been talking about how project scheduling integrated with your timesheets and project budgets would be invaluable.

    I see there are plans to develop this integration in the future. In our eyes this is key to us using Harvest ongoing.

    I have trialled several other products, and am looking for a solution that is not over complicated, graphically simple and intuitive. The one that closest fits this is 10,000ft. However there timesheet input is not intuituve. I think that they are closer to the finished article though.

    Please Harvest speed this through but not to the detriment of the project. The office are all used to Harvest, we love its simplicity and everybody is used to using it, but as said we have started prying elsewhere.

    Way too expensive. I can’t justify the cost. I was expecting this to be bundled with our harvest account as a new feature, with what we pay now, NOT an additional, separate cost. Harvest is very expensive as it is! I’m a smaller company with little staff but LOTS of projects.

    I’m kind of worried this is what you’ve been spending your time on. The Harvest app on my mobile device doesn’t even support invoicing, only time tracking. That’s primarily what I use Harvest for!

    This is disappointing.

    – we use IE9 for a corporate Desktop – Doesn’t seem to work.
    – Cannot print the schedules
    – If I have lots of projects – it is really time consuming to find the project that I want to allocate someone to.
    – Consider using putting more functionality smarts into the schedule where someone gets an email if the schedule is changed.

    This is almost the tool we need. Pricing & costing features would complete the offering, especially if we could import that data for each user from Harvest.

    Also, it would be great to have an excel/csv export data option for further analysis.
