We’re very excited to announce the latest version of Harvest for Mac today! This version introduces a completely new Timesheet window, better Timestamps support, the Weekly Summary Bar (which you’ll recognize from our mobile and web apps), support for the new Harvest ID authentication system, a new Time Summary, and many other improvements. We’ll talk through a few of these enhancements here, but to see it for yourself, you should download the new version and see what you think!
New Timesheet
You’ll notice right away that our Timesheet window is now attached to the menu bar. For those of you who love the mouse, that means you can see today’s time with one click. For you keyboard lovers, the familiar shortcut still brings up the Timesheet. And for those of you who don’t care for this new attached style, we’ve made it easy to go back to the old behavior – simply drag the window away from the menu bar and it will detach. You can position it anywhere you like, just as in the original Harvest for Mac.
Time Summary
For those of you who’ve asked for a weekly total, we’re very pleased to bring you the new Time Summary. This window, which you can raise at any time with the default shortcut of Option-Command-S (⌥⌘S), will give you totals for today, yesterday, this week, and this month. You no longer need to do the math in your head, or consult the Harvest web app. One click or shortcut on a Friday afternoon, and you’ll know right away if you’ve met your weekly time goal.
Weekly Summary Bar and Adding Time to Past Days
We’ve also heard from many of you who’d like to view, edit, and add time to past days more easily in the Mac app. Our answer for this is the Weekly Summary Bar, which you may recognize from the web and mobile apps. This bar gives you the entire week at a glance, with totals for each day. It’s also interactive–just click a day and you’ll instantly see the entries from that day. Does Monday’s total look low to you? Click the ‘M’ and add the entry you forgot.
Streamlined and Simplified Forms
One of the biggest changes you’ll notice on a daily basis is in the forms you use to track and edit time entries. Previous versions of Harvest for Mac used two different forms for entering and editing time. In Harvest for Mac 2.0, you’ll notice we’ve used the same design for both forms. The end result makes the app much more intuitive.
Those of you who use Timestamps mode to track your time will notice that you can now enter the Start Time and End Time for a new entry.
Fast Account Switching and Harvest ID
If you’ve been a Harvest user for over a few months, then you’re probably already familiar with our recent move to a centralized sign-in system called Harvest ID. Harvest for Mac 2.0 uses this new system, which means you can now switch between your Harvest ID connected accounts in just a couple clicks. No more signing out and signing back in. Simply go to the Settings menu, click Switch Accounts, and select the account you want to use.
Whether you’re a long time Harvest for Mac user or you’re just getting started, we think version 2.0 is going to make time-tracking easier than ever. If you haven’t upgraded already, we invite you to give it a try today. Download it here or in the Mac App Store. And as always, let us know what you think!
Harvest for Mac 2.0, but no Harvest for Win 1.0 yet.
Amazing.
Thanks for this update! It’s great that we can now access the timesheet directly from the menu bar and it’s very helpful to have daily and weekly totals one click away. I appreciate your attentiveness to your users: you’ve added exactly the features I needed. However, I have immediately run into some glitches. I’m unable to change the project and task for a running timer, and attempting to save a running timer even with no modifications results in the message “Fields required. A valid project and task is required.”
So far so good. Really like the flexibility of being able to look at the entire week without going over to the Harvest Website. Keep the improvements coming.
@Drew: Thanks! We’re so glad you’re enjoying this update!
@Andrew: Thanks for the kind words! Would you mind getting in touch with us at support@harvestapp.com about these glitches? We’d like to make sure they’re fixed in the next version.
@Felix: We don’t have any plans to build a native app for Windows at the moment. Sorry! Thanks for the feedback!
Love the new functionalities in the new version, and it looks slick!!
That said, I couldn’t find a way to launch my harvest account in a browser. A feature which I frequently used in the previous version.
Am I missing something or has this featured been removed??
@Sanjeev: Thanks for your comment! The menu item to go to your Harvest account is still present under the File menu, but we removed it from the Settings menu (the gear icon on your Timesheet). We plan on adding this link back to the Settings menu in our next update. Stay tuned!
@Doug: Thanks for the tip! Will look forward to the next update.
Actually think this is a step backwards in productivity. Start/stop current timer and add new task was much quicker in previous version. Also miss the launch website link as mentioned previously. But I¨ll give it a few days before I get really upset, might just be change resistance ;-)
Thanks for your comment, Lasse. We tried to be very careful not to disturb existing workflows in this version, though it sounds like we may have interfered with yours. Sorry about that! I’m curious to know, do you not use the orange (formerly blue) H icon to start/stop your current timer? Was there a faster way you toggled your timer in the previous version?
And I hear you about the link—we’ll be adding that back in the next update.
Really need the link to Harvest account added back in!!
Thanks for letting us know, Steve. We’ll get that link back in the next update!
Love the new look, there’s only one thing missing… FAVOURITES!
Thanks David, I’m glad you like it! I’ll make a note of your request for Favorites!
I’m using the web interface at the moment and was excited to see this development. However, I find I can’t use it as I run OS 10.10 Yosemite and this requires 10.11.
Unfortunately I cannot upgrade to 10.11 as it will break something which I cannot work without, so I’m stuck with 10.10 until Apple fix it (perhaps with Sierra).
Any chance of making the app work with (slightly) older versions of OSX??
Thanks
Great question, Andrew. Unfortunately, we had to make a call on compatibility with 10.10 or preparing for Sierra (10.12). We decided to look forward to 10.12 in the hopes that it will be out some time this fall. I can see how this puts you in a tough spot with Yosemite. Sorry about that!
Any reason why you need 10.11+? I’m on 10.10.5 Yosemite, like a lot of people I guess reluctant to upgrade my entire OS on my work laptop right now just for one app.
Any chance you could make it available to 10.10.x people?
Love the new design! Feature request: Add an option in settings to hide the display of the time in the navigation bar.
Thanks Lucius, I’m glad you like it! And I’ve made a note of your request.
Still don’t understand why I can’t create a new project from that interface…
Note box still not smoothly resizable, so editing long notes are still a nightmare. But thanks for the summary update :)
Thanks for the feedback, Carlos!
I”m attempting to update to v2.0 but when I go to the iTunes Store page, it clearly indicates that this is version 2.0, but the button only says “open,” there is no “update” or “get” option.
I checked “About Harvest” on my desktop and it shows as version 1.5.1.
Sorry about that Daniel! Maybe try downloading it directly from here: https://www.getharvest.com/mac. We’ll have a look into our App Store listing to see what’s up.
+1 for :
– Still don’t understand why I can’t create a new project from that interface…
– Add an option in settings to hide the display of the time in the navigation bar.
– Really need the link to Harvest account added back in!!
– Start/stop current timer and add new task was much quicker in previous version.
Despite that I really enjoy this kind of new UX!
Ditto!

Something I’ve asked for a couple of times and now it’s here! The ability to restart a task from a previous day and change the date to the current date on the running task. Previously you had to stop it, change the date, restart it, then delete the zero-time entry. Made no sense to me. Thank you, Harvest, for listening :-)
Our pleasure! And thanks for the comment, Dermod!
Agree with previous posts – really need the link back to the Harvest account back in. Can’t imagine why you would want to remove it.
OK – I see the link back to the Harvest account in the File dropdown. I can live with that.

Sorry about that Eric! This appears to be an issue with the App Store listing that is only affecting some users. If you’re unable to update through the App Store, you can grab the new version directly from this page: https://www.getharvest.com/mac
Yes, I like this! Well done minimal design. One question: why is the _latest_ entry shown; I would expect to see the days total. (But that’s IMHO)
I can’t get my app to update. I already have the app and am going through the App Store but it just opens the app for me. Doesn’t show an avialable update in the store or desktop app
My harvest is constantly offline… I am online but it shows as offline. Before I could kickstart it with the start new timer option but now I can’t… help?!
Hi Talia, if you’re still seeing this issue, would you mind writing in to support@harvestapp.com so we can help you troubleshoot it further? Thanks!
Did you get many feature requests asking for a new Mac app?
Yes, we did! And thanks to all those who wrote in with feature requests for Harvest for Mac. Your input was very helpful to us in building this updated version!
Great – but is is a killer that there is no link to Harvest account! I use that function many times during the day to check on the budget of a project etc.
Love the update – but I really need my links back!
Thanks Thomas! I’m glad to hear you like the update! Hang in there for the link to your account. We’ll get that back in soon!
I think the reason some of us are having trouble with using the File menu to go to our Harvest account is because the Harvest menus might be hidden altogether. That was the case for me until I went into the Harvest preferences and turned on “show in dock and app switcher”
Great point, Brenda! That is true that this link will not appear when you’re running in “dock-less” mode. In the next update, we’ll make sure it always appears, regardless of which mode you’re running in.
I wish I could set up multiple accounts without having to log in/out to switch between them. Like the Mail app. Then list all the projects in the “New Time Entry” window.
Thanks for the feedback, Ken!
Is there a way to submit hours for approval from the new version? If not, that would be a great feature to add.
Thanks for the suggestion, Willie!
The new app looks very nice.
It doesn’t seem to be released in the Canadian Apple App Store yet. Any idea when it’s coming there?
Also, I was wondering if this version includes or a new version could include offline support so that I can track time while on a plane or with a bad connection and it could sync the time entries when I’m back online.
Thanks Joey! I’ve made a note of your request for an offline mode on Mac. For now, the only Harvest apps that support an offline mode are Harvest for Android and Harvest for iPhone.
Love the update. I know the API allows it, I’m wondering why I can’t add tasks/projects from the interface?
Thanks Tim! I’ve made a note of your request. Project/task/client creation in Harvest for Mac is not a high priority at the moment only because the full set of project management functionality is so near at hand already on the desktop. Our hope is that users can get to the Harvest web application quickly and easily from Harvest for Mac when they need to do something like add a new project, assign a new task, or view a report.
Ohh… That’s great..!! its wonder to use..
The app is definitely better looking, but one thing is bugging me (I first had two things, but it seems that the search function that was first somehow broken is now behaving like it used to):
In the old app I used two shortcuts: F2 for show/hide timesheet, cmd+F2 for new timer. But now the app won’t let me use the cmd+F2 if the other one is set as F2. It just shows a dialog saying “The key combination Command + F2 can’t be used because it’s already in use.”
I also had the problem with app store just saying “Open” instead of “Install” and nothing on the updates either. Had to download directly.
Thanks for your comment Eemeli! If you’re still having trouble with setting shortcuts, please write in to support@harvestapp.com and we can help you troubleshoot the issue.
Ubuntu/Linux support???
The full suite of Harvest features should work well in a modern browser on Ubuntu. We don’t currently have a native Harvest app for Linux, and we don’t plan on building one anytime soon. Sorry!
Fantastic update, I love the additional functionality & easy access to summary data, thank you!!!
Thanks for the kind words, Jeanne!
Hi, I’m having the exact same problem as Andrew Byrd.
~I’m unable to change the project and task for a running timer, and attempting to save a running timer even with no modifications results in the message “Fields required. A valid project and task is required.” ~
This makes a great update almost unusable. I have to go into Harvest in the browser to make edits to a running timer. Is this on your radar? Thanks in advance.
For those facing the ‘valid project and task is required’, I was able to remedy this by going to Preferences -> Support and hitting the ‘Clear Cache’ button. It requires you to put your login credentials in again, but I’ve yet to hit the again issue since.
@Tom Harrigan, thank you. This works for me so far.
Yes, thanks @Tom! There was apparently an issue during the upgrade for some where stale data was preventing saves. Preferences > Support > Clear Cache is definitely the solution for this issue. We’ll work on making sure this doesn’t happen in future versions.
Time Summary in the new Mac-app is perfect. I would like to se this feature in the iOS version as well!
Thanks Marcus! With any luck, you’ll be seeing the same feature in our iOS app very soon!
I am lucky! Thanks for the implementation of the Time Summary feature in iOS. Thumbs up to you.
Thanks Marcus! We’re glad you like it!
I miss the ‘go to website’ click in the timesheet widget. As an admin who is still a creative, I need to pop over often. I know I can go to the nav bar, but it’s a function you removed and I still miss it all the time
Thanks for the feedback, Cameron. We are rolling out a new version this week which adds the Go to My Account link back to the Settings menu. If you go to https://www.getharvest.com/mac you should be able to download it today. It should also be in the App Store in a few days.
Unfortunately is crashing on macOS Sierra.
Hello from NZ – I agree with some comments above – it does look slicker but overall has been slower for…..
– Start/stop current timer and add new task was much quicker in previous version.
with that lovely little gear – why can’t it have 1 more link “add new project” – which points at the harvest account project page and sooooo glad the “go to harvest account….” is coming back!!
